Chicago Train Derailment at O'Hare Airport Injures at Least 32

The cars jumped off the track and started to climb the escalator.

March 24, 2014— -- A commuter train derailed this morning at Chicago O'Hare International Airport, injuring dozens of passengers, officials said.

The eight-car train derailed around 2:55 a.m. as it was pulling into the O'Hare station. The train apparently failed to stop and jumped 10 feet off the rails, Chicago Fire Department Spokesman Larry Langford told ABC News.

After it derailed, the train started to climb the escalator in the station, Langford said.

Langford said six people were in serious condition and 26 others suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The Chicago Transit Authority is investigating why the train kept moving past the station.

Chicago Transit Authority spokesman Brian Steele said it appeared the train was going at a rate of speed that was "higher than normal," according to ABC News station WLS-TV. Steele said the train jumped a bumping post designed to prevent such accidents.
