Lindsay Clancy trial: Jury enters day 2 of deliberations

Deliberations are continuing in the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy. The jury has had the case for around five hours.

After a brief sidebar, Judge William Sullivan sent the attorneys away. He did not disclose the reason for the sidebar.

Kevin Reddington, Clancy’s attorney, told reporters while leaving the courthouse that the jury has asked to see two bags of pill bottles and the knife she used to cut herself during her suicide attempt.

The jury in the triple murder trial of Lindsay Clancy resumed its deliberations Friday morning about whether the Massachusetts mother should be held criminally responsible for the strangulation deaths of her three children.

The 12 jurors – nine women and three men – are considering whether Clancy should not be held criminally responsible because she was allegedly in the throes of postpartum psychosis when she killed her children, or if she acted intentionally to murder them.

In addition to weighing Clancy’s state of mind against the elements of first and second-degree murder, jurors also have the option to consider whether her actions constitute manslaughter.

They have been deliberating for more than three hours. Deliberations resume Friday at 9 a.m.

Before deliberations began, Judge William Sullivan described the verdict form to the jury. The foreperson needs to check one option for each count, which corresponds to each of the three children.

Jurors have the options of Not Guilty, Not Guilty by Lack of Criminal Responsibility, Guilty of Murder in the First Degree by the Theory of Deliberate Premeditation, or Extreme Atrocity and Cruelty, Guilty of Murder in the Second Degree, Guilty of Manslaughter.
