Democrat Dr. Abdul El-Sayed will be the first Muslim senator after ABC News projected he won the race for the state's open Senate seat against Republican Mike Rogers, a former congressman. The race had been seen before the election as an indication of how control of the Senate might go.

With most of the vote counted Wednesday morning, El-Sayed won 53% of the vote to Rogers' 45%. The seat opened up after Democratic Sen. Gary Peters announced he would retire after his current term.

And ABC News projects Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson will win the race to replace term-limited Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. As of Wednesday morning, Benson had 55% of the vote to Republican U.S. Rep. John James' 44%.

Down the ballot, Democrats are projected to flip two Republican-held House seats and in a third, Rep. Tom Barrett conceded to his Democratic opponent.
