Record-breaking heat wave slams the South: Latest forecast
The temperature is forecast to hit 100 degrees in Austin and Nashville Thursday.
It has been the hottest first two weeks of September on record for millions in states including Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky and Indiana -- and the threat isn't over.
The South is enduring a long heat wave as a heat dome sits over the region. Jonesboro, Arkansas, hit a daily high of 101 degrees on Wednesday while Nashville, Tennessee, and Austin, Texas, tied their record high temperature of 99.
More record highs are possible on Thursday, with temperatures forecast to soar to a chart-topping 100 degrees in Austin and Nashville, and 99 degrees in Dallas, Memphis, Tennessee, and St. Louis, Missouri. And with humidity, it could feel like up to 108 degrees in these cities.
More record highs are possible on Friday and through the weekend before the heat dome collapses early next week.
Even though the heat wave will be over, above average temperatures are still forecast for most of the U.S. next week.
