MIAMI -- MIAMI (AP) — JJ Kohl thew for 367 yards and three touchdowns, and he also had a receiving score to lead Florida International to a 33-20 victory over Buffalo on Saturday.
FIU used a trick play in the first quarter to take a 14-3 lead. Kohl handed it off and ran towards the end zone to make a leaping grab of Jojo Stone’s pass for a 19-yard touchdown. Then Kohl connected with Maguire Anderson for a 14-yard touchdown to make it 21-3 with 2:25 left before halftime.
Kohl threw a short pass to Stone, who broke two tackles before racing down the sideline for a 68-yard touchdown for a 27-14 lead about 7 minutes into the third. FIU went 58 yards in nine plans on its next possession to take a 16-point lead on a 36-yard field goal by Robert Czeremcha.
Jai-Ayviauynn Celestine sealed it on an interception with 3:26 left in the fourth.
Stone finished with four catches for 99 yards and a touchdown for FIU (1-1). Anderson added 99 yards receiving and two scores. Kohl, who passed for 300-plus yards and a career-high 31 completions in a 19-9 loss at South Florida last Saturday, went 21 of 36 against Buffalo.
Jason Wright was 13 of 27 for 185 yards with two touchdowns and one interception for Buffalo (1-1). Chance Morrow had 173 yards receiving and two touchdowns.
It was the first meeting between the programs.
