Independents key factor in Iowa Senate flip: ABC News Voter Polls

Josh Turek's victory in the Iowa Senate race was propelled by strength among independents and peeling off enough Trump 2024 voters, according to ABC News Voter Poll findings.

Self-identified independents in Iowa preferred Turek by around 20 percentage points, according to ABC News Voter Polls. Party-switching among Democrats and Republicans was relatively muted, but Turek captured more Republicans than Democrats who voted for GOP candidate Ashley Hinson, the data showed.

About 1 in 10 Iowa Senate voters who backed Trump in 2024 crossed over to Turek, while few Kamala Harris voters supported Hinson, according to ABC News Voter Polls.

Trump says 'we didn't get the people out,' voters 'didn’t like the candidates'

President Donald Trump spoke with Politico via phone on Tuesday night following the results of Tuesday's midterm election.

When asked what his message was tonight in the aftermath of the results, Trump said, "I wasn't on the ballot, and we didn't get the people out, but I wasn't on the ballot. If I was on the ballot, we would have won."

Pressed on his comments telling voters to pretend that he was on the ballot, Trump said that voters didn't agree.

"Yeah, I said, 'Say you're on the ballot. Think about me being on the ballot.' But they didn't agree, and they didn't like the candidates in most cases, just one of those things," Trump added.
