Michigan, New Mexico say DOJ monitors behaved improperly
Election officials in Michigan and New Mexico accused Justice Department monitors of improper behavior on Tuesday.
In New Mexico, officials said they "received reports that verified monitors with the Department of Justice have been asking some unusual questions and questioning voters in Bernalillo County."
In Flint and Dearborn, Michigan, officials said the election monitors "were asking poll workers for copies of their training materials," which a spokesperson for the Michigan Department of State said is not permitted under the law.
The DOJ on Tuesday sent upward of 900 election monitors to polling places in all 50 states -- far more than the usual number. New Mexico and Michigan officials said they have lodged complaints with the Justice Department.
Justice Department spokesperson Kristen Pels told ABC News that monitors in Michigan "asked their typical questions about election official training," and said that "we are allowed to talk to voters after they've voted and are leaving the polling location, which is a longstanding practice in the division."
Pels said Justice Department officials spoke with the New Mexico secretary of state on Tuesday night and "we believe the issue is resolved."
