Maine Democrat Troy Jackson projected to win Senate race over incumbent Sen. Collins

ABC News projects that Democrat and logger Troy Jackson will win the Senate race in Maine, defeating incumbent Republican Sen. Susan Collins.

Collins was the only Republican running in a state this election cycle that former Vice President Kamala Harris won during the 2024 presidential election.

The Maine Senate race was upended earlier this summer after the initial Democratic nominee, Graham Plater, withdrew from the Senate race following allegations of sexual assault, which he has denied.

Jackson defeat of Collins flips a state that Democrats have long sought. Collins faced a reelection in an environment not so friendly to Republicans, and despite past elections where she’s been able to run independent of Trump, she couldn't do so tonight.

Anger over state of the country, Trump helped Dems take Kansas Senate seat: ABC News Voter Poll

Adam Hamilton made history Tuesday and became the first Democrat to be elected to the U.S. Senate from Kansas since 1932.

ABC News Voter Polls found that 4 in 10 Kansas Senate voters said they are angry about the way things are going in the country today. Those voters supported Hamilton over Republican Sen. Roger Marshall by roughly an 80-point margin.

Nearly 6 in 10 Kansas Senate voters disapprove of Trump including about half who strongly disapprove and they widely supported Hamilton over Marshall, according to ABC News Voter Polls.

Speaker Johnson says he's 'disappointed' in election results but 'never discouraged'

House Speaker Mike Johnson acknowledged that he is "disappointed" in the midterm election results during remarks in Shreveport, Louisiana.

"To every American disappointed by tonight's results, I mean, I am disappointed, too. But we are never discouraged. OK? Because we live in the greatest nation in the world," Johnson, who appeared emotional, said.

Johnson said the outcome of an election "on one night doesn't change" Republicans' mandate.

"Republicans have much more work to do to give every American a shot at a better life, to ensure that the United States remains the freest and most prosperous, most powerful nation in the history of the world," he said. "We will never give up on that endeavor and that vision. A new Congress doesn't change that at all."

The speaker said he will address the midterms more in the coming days.
