Midterm elections live updates: Trump to deliver remarks, join tele-rallies on Monday

President Donald Trump is scheduled to appear at the Reflecting Pool on Monday.

The high-stakes midterm elections are a day away, and candidates are making their final pitches to voters.

There are several key House and Senate races that could determine the balance of power in Congress as well as significant races for governor around the country. The elections could ultimately determine how effective President Donald Trump's agenda is in the back half of his second term.

Trump continues to sow election doubts as he makes closing arguments to voters

President Donald Trump delivered a grievance-filled stump speech in Dubuque, Iowa, on Sunday, just two days out from the critical midterm elections that will decide the future of his administration's agenda.

Throughout his two-hour-long speech, Trump sought to sow doubt in Tuesday’s elections, calling various states “crooked” and “corrupt” and claiming that Democrats “have to cheat” to win.

“I hope our candidate does well, but they’re totally crooked,” Trump said as he discussed Minnesota. “Minnesota is so corrupt. Maine is very corrupt. California. Forget about it,” he said.

“Look, they’ll try figuring something, but it’s much harder because they have to cheat. Because without. Look, their policies are so bad,” Trump added later while discussing implementing paper ballots instead of machines for voting.

According to the Brennan Center for Justice, extensive research reveals that fraud is very rare, voter impersonation is virtually nonexistent and many instances of alleged fraud are, in fact, mistakes by voters or administrators.

Trump attacks El-Sayed during stump speech in Iowa

Speaking in Dubuque, Iowa, on Sunday, Trump repeatedly discussed Michigan's Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed. He told the crowd that Congress would need to install a "special metal detector" for him.

Trump has repeatedly attacked El-Sayed for his Muslim faith and consistently refers to him as a "jihadist."

“We’ll have to put him through metal detectors in order to seat. He’ll be -- we’ll have 100 senators and most of them can go direct. We’re going to have to get a special metal detector for Abdul,” Trump said.

At one point, as he discussed Rep. Haley Stevens’ endorsement of Republican Mike Rogers, he implied that she won the primary contest that she, in fact, lost to El-Sayed.

“If you remember, she was going to be like 25 points down, everybody thought it was going to be a walk -- a lot of people think she won,” Trump said. He praised Stevens' endorsement on Sunday, saying, "She showed great and almost unprecedented loyalty to the great people of Michigan, and that’s another important election for us. We don’t want to have a jihadist.”

Dem Rep. Stevens joins GOP candidate Rogers for press conference after surprise endorsement

Michigan Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens and Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers, in a joint press conference after Stevens endorsed Rogers, defended the decision as one that is right for Michigan, adding that it was about standing "with country."

Stevens endorsed Rogers against Democratic nominee Dr. Abdul El-Sayed after Stevens had previously said she would support El-Sayed.

Stevens said that “90% of the votes I'm going to cast are going to be for Democrats. My vote for Senate, I am just one vote, as is every Michigander. My vote for Senate is going to be with Mike Rogers. And I will tell you why. Because we have to stand with country."

She said El-Sayed boxed her out of his campaign. "I did endorse the Democratic nominee, and he chose to close his campaign by saying I wasn't welcome… This is about looking in the mirror about how real Democrats for Rogers are."

Trump praises Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens for endorsing Republican Mike Rogers

President Donald Trump lavished praise on Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens of Michigan after she endorsed Republican Mike Rogers on Sunday over Democrat Abdul El-Sayed in the Senate race, who defeated Stevens in the primary.

“Wow, this is BIG!” Trump wrote on social media Sunday, reacting to the news.

“Her following is huge, and the level of respect from the People of Michigan, especially our African American and Jewish populations, is virtually unparalleled. Haley said what few people are willing to say,” Trump further said, adding that Stevens showed “great and almost unprecedented loyalty” to Michigan.

“It’s a thing called bravery, and few people have it like just displayed by Congresswoman Haley Stevens!” Trump said.
